Welcome
to the Home Page of the Wheat IPM Team at Oklahoma State University.
The Wheat IPM Team is highly interdisciplinary and is dedicated to
the education of wheat producers in crop management concepts that
maximize profitability for producers and minimize environmental contamination.
Oklahoma is second in the nation for the production of hard red winter
wheat, grown on more than 7 million acres. Oklahoma wheat can
have a "dual purpose," that is, wheat may be planted as foliage for
cattle grazing, for grain production, or for both. The dual
purpose system creates challenges for Oklahoma producers, related
to production and to profitability. Wheat that is managed
for production of both forage and grain is usually seeded earlier
in the fall than wheat that is managed for grain production alone.
Earlier planting predisposes the crop to additional stresses to a
greater frequency and severity than might be expected in conventional
grain-only systems. Thus while dual-purpose wheat may provide
stability through diversification, yield potential of available winter
wheat varieties grown for dual-purpose in Oklahoma is seldom realized,
and overall profitability of the system suffers.
